Sqft to Feet

There is no single number that turns square feet into feet — but there are two calculations that almost certainly answer what you need.

Square feet and feet measure different things, so they do not convert directly — 1 square foot is not 1 foot. Feet measure length; square feet measure area. A square foot is a square 1 ft on each side. What you probably want is either the side of a square with that area (the square root — 100 sq ft gives a 10 ft × 10 ft square), or the length of a strip when you already know its width (area ÷ width — 100 sq ft at 4 ft wide is 25 ft long).

Optional — fill in only if one side is fixed.

Leave the width blank if you just want the square. Fill it in when one dimension is already fixed — a hallway, a roll of material, a garden bed.

Why 1 sqft is not 1 foot

This is the most common unit mix-up in measurement, and it is worth being precise about.

  • A foot is a length. It has one dimension.
  • A square foot is an area — specifically, a square measuring 1 ft × 1 ft.

Asking how many feet are in a square foot is like asking how many miles are in an acre. There is no answer, because the two describe different kinds of quantity. Any calculator that gives you a single number for "1 sqft to feet" is producing a meaningless one.

A one foot line beside a one foot by one foot square. The line measures length in one dimension; the square measures area in two. They are different kinds of quantity and do not convert into each other.
One measures how far. The other measures how much surface.

The reason it feels like it should work is that the words look similar. Compare it to volume: nobody expects to convert cubic feet straight to feet either.

The two calculations you probably want

1. The side of a square. If the area is square, each side is the square root of the area:

  • 100 sq ft → √100 = 10 ft per side
  • 400 sq ft → √400 = 20 ft per side
  • 1,000 sq ft → √1,000 = 31.62 ft per side

2. The length when the width is known. Divide the area by the width:

  • 100 sq ft at 4 ft wide → 100 ÷ 4 = 25 ft long
  • 300 sq ft at 10 ft wide → 300 ÷ 10 = 30 ft long
  • 1,000 sq ft at 12 ft wide → 1,000 ÷ 12 = 83.33 ft long

The second is the one people usually need in practice, because rooms, rolls and beds nearly always have one dimension already fixed.

When you actually need linear feet

If you are ordering flooring, trim, fencing or countertop, the trade term is linear feet — the running length of material at a fixed width, which is exactly calculation 2 above.

That has its own page with the width entered in inches, the way material is normally sold: convert square feet to linear feet for flooring and trim. If you want the difference explained rather than calculated, see why square feet and linear feet measure different things.

Frequently asked questions

How many feet are in 1 square foot?

There is no answer, because feet measure length and square feet measure area. A square foot is a square 1 ft on each side, so its sides are 1 ft — but the square foot itself is not a length and does not convert to one.

Can you convert square feet to feet?

Not directly. You can find the side of a square with that area by taking the square root, or the length of a strip by dividing the area by its width. Both need more information than the area alone.

What is 100 sqft in feet?

If the space is square, 100 sq ft is 10 ft × 10 ft. If it is 4 ft wide, it is 25 ft long. If it is 5 ft wide, it is 20 ft long. The area alone does not fix the shape.

Is sqft the same as ft?

No. "ft" is feet, a length. "sqft", "sq ft" or "ft²" is square feet, an area. Writing one when you mean the other is the single most common measurement error in listings and quotes.

How do I get feet from square feet?

Divide the square footage by the dimension you already know. For a 240 sq ft room that is 12 ft wide, the length is 240 ÷ 12 = 20 ft.

What is the difference between sqft and linear feet?

Square feet measure area; linear feet measure running length at a fixed width. Flooring and trim are sold by linear foot, so converting between them needs the material width — see the linear feet calculator.
