How Many Sqft Is It? A Size Reference
Sizes people look up constantly, each one worked back to the dimensions it came from — so you can check the number rather than take it on trust.
A 10 × 10 room is 100 square feet, a two-car garage is around 400 square feet, a doubles tennis court is 2,808 square feet, and an acre is exactly 43,560 square feet. Every one of these comes from the same operation: multiply length by width in feet. Where a figure below is given as a range, it is because the thing itself varies — garages and mobile homes are built to no single standard.
Every figure on this page comes from one operation: length × width, both in feet. What changes is how much the thing you are measuring varies. A tennis court is fixed by the rules of the sport, so its area is exact. A garage is built to whatever the plot allowed, so its area is a range. Both kinds are marked below.
Rooms
| Room | Dimensions | Square feet |
|---|---|---|
| Small bedroom | 10 × 10 ft | 100 sq ft |
| Standard bedroom | 12 × 12 ft | 144 sq ft |
| Master bedroom | 14 × 16 ft | 224 sq ft |
| Kitchen | 12 × 14 ft | 168 sq ft |
| Living room | 16 × 20 ft | 320 sq ft |
| Full bathroom | 8 × 5 ft | 40 sq ft |
| Half bath (powder room) | 5 × 4 ft | 20 sq ft |
These are typical, not standard — there is no building code that fixes the size of a bedroom in the way there is for a court. For your own rooms, the room sqft calculator has these sizes built in as one-tap presets, and will total a whole house room by room.
Garages
Garage sizes vary more than people expect, which is why a single figure is misleading.
| Garage | Common range | Typical build | Typical sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| One car | 240–336 sq ft | 12 × 22 ft | 264 sq ft |
| Two car | 360–576 sq ft | 20 × 20 ft | 400 sq ft |
| Three car | 600–864 sq ft | 32 × 22 ft | 704 sq ft |
The low end of each range is the smallest build that still opens a car door. If you are sizing flooring, insulation or an epoxy coating, measure the slab — a 20 × 20 assumption against a real 24 × 24 garage leaves you 176 sq ft short — you would need 44% more material than you ordered.
Worth knowing separately: a garage does not count toward a home’s finished square footage, no matter how well finished it is. That rule and its exceptions are covered in what counts as square footage.
Courts and fields
These are fixed by the governing body of each sport, so the arithmetic is exact.
| Surface | Dimensions | Square feet |
|---|---|---|
| Pickleball court | 20 × 44 ft | 880 sq ft |
| Volleyball court | 18 × 9 m | ≈ 1,744 sq ft |
| Tennis court (singles) | 78 × 27 ft | 2,106 sq ft |
| Tennis court (doubles) | 78 × 36 ft | 2,808 sq ft |
| Tennis court (fenced enclosure) | 120 × 60 ft | 7,200 sq ft |
| Basketball court (high school) | 84 × 50 ft | 4,200 sq ft |
| Basketball court (NBA / NCAA) | 94 × 50 ft | 4,700 sq ft |
| Football field (playing area) | 300 × 160 ft | 48,000 sq ft |
| Football field (with end zones) | 360 × 160 ft | 57,600 sq ft |
| Soccer pitch (FIFA typical) | 105 × 68 m | ≈ 76,854 sq ft |
Two of these are metric by rule, not by preference — FIBA basketball, volleyball and soccer are all defined in meters, so their square footage is a conversion rather than a round number. Our sqft to sqm calculator does that conversion in either direction.
Containers, storage units and manufactured homes
A shipping container has two useful areas, and confusing them is the usual mistake: the ground it occupies, and the floor you can actually stand on inside. The steel walls and corner posts account for the difference.
| Structure | Footprint | Usable floor |
|---|---|---|
| 20 ft shipping container | 160 sq ft (20 × 8 ft) | ≈ 148 sq ft |
| 40 ft shipping container | 320 sq ft (40 × 8 ft) | ≈ 302 sq ft |
| Single-wide home | 840–1,440 sq ft | typically 16 × 72 ft = 1,152 sq ft |
| Double-wide home | 1,000–2,300 sq ft | typically 28 × 60 ft = 1,680 sq ft |
Self-storage units are sold by their nominal footprint, and the sizes are near-universal across operators:
| Unit | Square feet | Rough equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| 5 × 5 ft | 25 sq ft | A large closet |
| 5 × 10 ft | 50 sq ft | Contents of a single room |
| 10 × 10 ft | 100 sq ft | A one-bedroom apartment |
| 10 × 15 ft | 150 sq ft | A two-bedroom apartment |
| 10 × 20 ft | 200 sq ft | A small house, or a car |
| 10 × 30 ft | 300 sq ft | A three-bedroom house |
Land
| Area | Square feet |
|---|---|
| Quarter acre | 10,890 sq ft |
| Half acre | 21,780 sq ft |
| One acre | 43,560 sq ft |
| Football field (with end zones) | 57,600 sq ft |
| One hectare | 107,639 sq ft |
An acre is defined as 43,560 square feet rather than measured as it, which is why the number is exact and slightly odd-looking. It descends from the old measure of what one ox team could plough in a day: a furlong (660 ft) by a chain (66 ft). Multiply those and you get 43,560 exactly.
An acre has no shape. Any outline enclosing 43,560 square feet is an acre — a square one is about 208.7 ft on each side, but a long thin strip of the same area is equally an acre. Our calculator for how many square feet are in an acre converts in both directions, and picture any square footage figure to see the dimensions any area maps to.
Everyday objects
Useful when you are trying to picture a figure rather than order materials.
| Object | Square feet |
|---|---|
| Queen bed | 33.3 sq ft |
| King bed | 42.2 sq ft |
| Parking space | 160 sq ft |
| Sheet of plywood (4 × 8 ft) | 32 sq ft |
| Standard door (3 × 6.7 ft) | 20 sq ft |
How to work out any of these yourself
None of this needs a lookup table if you have the dimensions:
- Get both measurements in feet. Inches divided by 12, meters multiplied by 3.28084.
- Multiply length by width. That is the square footage.
- For anything that is not a rectangle, split it into rectangles, work out each one, and add them together.
A 14 ft 6 in by 11 ft 3 in room becomes 14.5 × 11.25 = 163.1 sq ft. The sqft calculator on the homepage handles the feet-and-inches conversion for you, and how to calculate square footage walks through the method for awkward shapes.
The one figure you cannot derive this way is the acre, because it is a definition rather than a shape — you have to know that it is 43,560 sq ft, or divide by it.
Frequently asked questions
How many sqft is a 10x10 room?
A 10 × 10 room is 100 square feet. Multiply the length by the width: 10 × 10 = 100. It is the size most self-storage companies sell as a one-bedroom unit, and roughly a small bedroom.
How many sqft is a 2 car garage?
A two-car garage is typically 400 square feet, from the common 20 × 20 ft footprint. Real builds run from about 360 sq ft (18 × 20) for a tight two-car to 576 sq ft (24 × 24) for one with storage or a workbench, so measure rather than assume.
How many sqft is a basketball court?
A regulation NBA and NCAA court is 94 × 50 ft, which is 4,700 square feet. A high school court is 84 × 50 ft, or 4,200 square feet. FIBA courts are metric at 28 × 15 m, which works out to about 4,521 square feet.
How many sqft is a tennis court?
The doubles court is 78 × 36 ft, which is 2,808 square feet. The singles court is narrower at 78 × 27 ft, or 2,106 square feet. A fenced court including the run-off space around the lines is usually about 7,200 square feet.
How many sqft is an acre?
An acre is exactly 43,560 square feet, by definition rather than by measurement. It is not a shape — an acre can be any outline at all, so there is no single set of dimensions that produces one. A square acre measures about 208.7 ft on each side.
How many sqft is a shipping container?
A 20-foot container covers 160 square feet of ground (20 × 8 ft) and gives about 148 square feet of usable floor inside, because the walls take up several inches. A 40-foot container covers 320 square feet and gives about 302 square feet inside.
How many sqft is a double wide?
Most double-wide manufactured homes fall between 1,000 and 2,300 square feet, with 28 × 60 ft — 1,680 square feet — a common size. A single-wide is usually 840 to 1,440 square feet.
How many sqft is a football field?
Including both end zones, an American football field is 360 × 160 ft, or 57,600 square feet — about 1.32 acres. The playing field alone, between the goal lines, is 300 × 160 ft, or 48,000 square feet.
